Women’s Soccer Draws Florida in NCAA Tournament For Second-Straight Year
FORT MYERS, Fla. – One day after capturing its second-straight Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, the FGCU women’s soccer team (14-3-3, 7-1-1 A-Sun) learned of its first round destination Monday night at the Naples Flatbread restaurant at the Miromar Outlets. FGCU will face SEC Champion Florida (17-4-1, 11-2-0 SEC) on Friday at 3 p.m. in the opening round at James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.
The Eagles and Florida will be facing each other for the second straight year in the postseason after the Gators defeated FGCU, 3-0, in the opening round last year at in the Green and Blue’s first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.
FGCU earned the A-Sun’s automatic bid into the field of 64 after freshman Ally Kasun (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS) scored in the 93rd minute of overtime to give the top-seeded Eagles a 1-0 win over second-seeded Mercer in the Atlantic Sun Championship game on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
In a rematch of last year A-Sun championship game, FGCU’s 1-0 win over Mercer was almost a mirror image of the 2011 outcome. In last year’s title game, the Eagles used a goal by then-freshman Shannen Wacker (Parker, Colo. Ponderosa HS) in the 106th minute to clinch its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.
FGCU stands at 14-3-3 on the season, tying the program record for wins in a season with last year’s team (14-5-2).
