FGCU Gets Set for Rematch with Florida in the NCAA Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After winning is second-straight Atlantic Sun Tournament Championship last weekend, the FGCU women’s soccer team (13-3-3, 7-1-1 A-Sun) will take on No. 8 Florida (17-4-1, 11-2 SEC) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, Friday at 3 p.m. at the James G. Pressly Stadium. This is the second-straight year the Eagles have been matched up with the Gators in the opening round.

FGCU was defeated by the Gators in Gainesville, 3-0, in last year’s opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles are winless against Florida in its only two meetings.

The Green and Blue won its second-straight A-Sun title when freshman Ally Kasun (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS) gained control of a loose ball off a blocked shot and ripped a right-footed blast from the middle of the 18 into the upper right corner for the golden goal at the 92:13 mark to defeat Mercer, 1-0, in the championship game. Kasun was named the A-Sun Tournament MVP.

Currently on a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) and a five-game shutout streak, FGCU is currently No. 47 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 64 projections, No. 53 in the latest NCAA RPI and tied for 10th in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Southeast Poll

Sophomore Shannen Wacker (Parker Colo./Ponderosa HS) leads the Eagles in points (25), goals (11) and ranks 12th in the country in game-winning goals (5). Her goal in the semifinal game against Jacksonville put her into a tie for the top spot in FGCU single-season history for goals in a season with Lindsay Haw, who did it back in 2007.

Kasun is second behind Wacker in points (21), goals (7) and third in assists (7). Classmate Shea Rhoney (Lithia, Fla./Newsome HS) is third in goals (6) and points (17). Senior Ashley Ciesielczyk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS) leads the team and is 13th in the country in assists with 10. Junior midfielder Kayley Clay (Cape Coral, Fla./Lynn) is fourth on the team in points (13) and is second in assists (9).

Freshman Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS) has started the last 18 games in goal for the Eagles, holding a 13-2-3 record on the season and a goals-against average (GAA) of 0.58, which is ranks 19th in the nation and her .874 save percentage ranks 13th in the country.

Florida claimed its 12th SEC title with a 11-2 regular season record and completed the sweep of league titles Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Auburn in the SEC Tournament title match. The SEC Tournament title was the 10th for the Gators. Senior All-American Erika Tymrak leads the Gators’ in goals (8), assists (10) and points (26). Senior Jo Dragotta and sophomore Havana Solaun each have seven goals to share second. Solaun’s 22 points is second on the team. Florida placed four on 2012 All-SEC teams with two picking up top honors. Senior Holly King was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year pick while Tymrak claimed the SEC Offensive Player of the Year honor. Dragotta, King and Tymrak appeared on the All-SEC first team and freshman Christen Westphal earned a spot on the All-SEC second team. The quartet also were named to the SEC All-Tournament team with Tymrak earning the MVP honor for the second time since 2010. Seven Gators have turned in five or more goals this season.
