FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s soccer team (5-1-1) will welcome the Memphis Tigers (5-2) to the FGCU Soccer Complex on Friday evening looking to extend its streak of six games without a loss, a stretch that currently includes a four-game win streak. The match will also serve as the Eagles’ final non-conference test at home as they look to extend their 13-game unbeaten streak at the friendly confines.
The last time the Eagles were on the pitch was in their final game in Hawaii where the Blue and Green produced a 5-1 victory over Idaho State that included a four-goal performance from freshman Tabby Tindell (Ocala Fla, Trinity Catholic HS). Coupled with an assist in the Eagles’ 1-0 win over Portland State, Tindell’s nine-point weekend earned her Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors, the first for any FGCU player in 2013.
Tindell’s performance on Sunday etched her name in the FGCU record books. She set a freshman program record with those four goals. They were also good for second-most in program history, bested only by junior transfer Courtney Eppleman’s five goals in FGCU’s first-ever Division I game in August 2007. The eight points by Tindell are also a freshman record and second only to Eppleman’s 10.
The program currently rests just outside the NSCAA Southeast Region Top 10 rankings as of September 17. Maryland, Clemson, Boston College and Samford all sit in a tie for eighth while FGCU waits in the eleventh position.
Tabby Tindell’s six goals in 2013 have her in a tie for 28th nationally. Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y., Greece Athena HS) has started all seven games in net for the Blue and Green and has been stellar. In 641:33 minutes, she boasts a 0.70 goals against average and has hauled in 27 saves with three shutouts. Melissa Arnold (Sicklerville, N.J., Timber Creek Regional HS) leads the Eagles with six assists while Paulina Speckmaier (Miami Fla., Gulliver Prep/University of Florida) and Kaitlin Parker (Palm Harbor Fla., Clearwater Central Catholic HS) trail Tindell in the goals column with two each.
There are 14 different players that can say they have contributed to the Eagles’ 51 points this season. That is already two more players than contributed points last season. Only 12 players contributed to the 119 points in 2012.
After beginning the 2013 campaign with a pair of victories at home over Samford and Missouri, Memphis finally dropped a game to Vanderbilt, 2-1 in the finale of its three-game, season-opening home stand. Following a pair of wins on the road over Middle Tennessee State and Western Kentucky, the Tigers returned home and dismantled SEC foe Alabama, 6-0. The victory over the Crimson Tide served as the programs 100th since 2007. They would however follow that up with a 3-0 loss to Ole Miss on Sunday. The Tigers can boast a pair of five-goal scorers in Christabel Oduro and Valerie Sanderson. Oduro has also added a pair of assists to make up her team-leading 12 points. Kaitlyn Atkins leads the Tigers with four helpers for her only four points of the season.
The Eagles will conclude their non-conference slate on Sunday (Sept. 22) at UCF. The game is currently slated for a 6 p.m. kick-off. The Eagles have won three-straight on the road and will be looking to rectify last season’s 4-0 loss to UCF at home. That match was the last time the Eagles dropped a result at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
