HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.– The FGCU women’s soccer team (7-3-1) will be visiting Northern Kentucky University on Friday (Oct. 4) and Lipscomb on Sunday (Oct. 6) looking to build upon its 2-0 start in Atlantic Sun play. The Eagles are unbeaten through the opening weekend of conference play for the second-consecutive year.
Last Time Out
The defending A-Sun champions began their title defense with victories over Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida last weekend.
The match with Jacksonville turned into a dramatic come-from-behind affair that saw Eagle goals scored with less than two minutes remaining in each half. The first tally was scored by Tessa Berger (Mahurangi East, New Zealand/Epsom Girls Grammar School) with just 28 seconds remaining in the first half. Berger headed home a corner kick for her second score the season. In the second half, senior Kayley Clay (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS/Lynn University) fired home a shot from 30 yards out with 1:29 left to seal the victory.
Opposite North Florida it was Paulina Speckmaier (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep/University of Florida) who took control for the Eagles. In just 60 minutes off the bench, Speckmaier scored two goals and assisted on a third to secure the 3-0 victory for the Green and Blue. All three goals were scored in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Speckmaier and Berger’s efforts over the weekend earned them Atlantic Sun Player of the Week and Co-Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
Scouting Northern Kentucky
The Norse will welcome the Eagles in their A-Sun home opener. NKU enters the weekend with a 4-6-1 record and an 0-2 mark in the A-Sun after dropping decisions to Mercer and Kennesaw State last weekend. Mercer bested the Norse by a score of 3-1 on Friday (Sept. 27), while Kennesaw State then defeated NKU on Sunday (Sept. 29), 2-0. NKU has scored 14 goals while allowing 16 this season. Allison Ponzer leads the way with three scores while Sami Rutowski and Katelyn Newton each have two.
When They Met Last
FGCU scored five goals in the second half in last season’s matchup with Northern Kentucky en route to a 5-0 shutout during which Shannen Wacker (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) collected a trio of goals for the Eagles that day, one of just four hat-tricks in FGCU women's soccer history. Courtney Eppleman (2007), Katie Donnellan (2009) and Tabby Tindell (Ocala, Fla./Trinity Catholic HS), who accomplished the feat earlier this season, can boast the other three. With Northern Kentucky still relavtively new the A-Sun, Friday will serve as just the second meeting between the two programs.
The Bisons also took on Kennesaw State and Mercer last weekend. Lipscomb emerged with a 1-1 record falling to Kennesaw State, 2-1, before taking down Mercer, 2-1. The Bisons are carrying a 4-5-2 overall record and are 2-2-1 at home. Lipscomb has already improved upon its 2-11-4 record in 2012 due in large part to outscoring its opponents, 24-13. Eleven of those two dozen have come from Ellen Lundy, who leads the conference and stands in a tie for sixth nationally in total goals.
When They Met Last
The Eagles got the best of the Bisons last season at the FGCU Soccer Complex, claiming a 2-0 victory. In six all-time meetings with the Nashville-based school, FGCU has never lost, owning a 5-0-1 record.
FGCU will return home next weekend for its final appearances at the FGCU Soccer Complex during the regular season. The Green and Blue will welcome ETSU on Friday (Oct. 11) at 7 p.m before celebrating senior day with a 1 p.m. kickoff against USC Upstate on Sunday, Oct. 13.
