Courtney Eppleman scored five goals in the season opener
Fort Myers, Fla. - The FGCU women’s soccer team posted 10-0 win versus Alabama State in the first home contest as a member of Division I. The Eagles dominated the field to win their first Division I match in The Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic in front of 1026 fans on Friday night.
“We played with discipline and passion; we put pressure on them early that led eight goals in the first period,” Eagles Head Coach Jim Blakenship said. “With every match brings a new challenge, but this was a good way to open the season.”
The first goal in FGCU women’s soccer history came when freshman Kayley McMillan (Calgary, Canada) cross found freshman Lindsay Haw (Palm City, Fla.) in the box, where she hit the eight-yard header in the 12th minute for her first of two goals of the night.
The Eagles expanded the lead in the 13th minute when freshman Caytlan MacKenzie (Calgary, Canada) crossed the ball to junior Courtney Eppleman (Fort Myers, Fla.) who put it in for her first of five goals on the night. The Eagles also received scores from MacKenzie in the 18th minute, freshman Kelli Haemmelmann ( St.Petersburg, Fla.) in the 28th minute, and freshman Michelle Kuhnen (Eau Claire, Wis.) in the 34th minute.
The Eagles held the Hornets to no shots on goal, while the Eagles had 40 shots and 10 goals.
The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday to finish The Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic. The Eagles will host the Panthers from Florida International at 1:00 pm at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
