Fort Myers, Fla. - Missed opportunities and a key injury highlighted the FGCU Women’s Soccer Team 1-0 loss to Toledo on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
The Eagles started off the game with lots of energy and momentum and got an early chance when freshman Lindsay Haw (Palm City, Fla.) got a look in the middle of the box, but couldn’t get the shot off. The Eagles missed yet another opportunity at 33:16 of the first half when freshman Michelle Kuhnen (Eau Claire, Wis.) sent her shot over the net.
The lone goal of the match came at 12:27 of the first half after a Toledo corner kick, freshman Brittany Hensler (Strongsville, Oh.) got her shot past FGCU goalie Emily Barrett (Chico, Cal.). Barrett suffered an injury on the play and was carted of the field after a 40 minute delay. “It was a rough one,” said Head Coach Jim Blankenship of the injury. Barrett was replaced by Kirsi Keenan who played well, making one save.
The Eagles had another chance to score at the end of the first half when sophomore Amber McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.) sailed a free kick just wide of the net.
The Eagles kept the pressure on Toledo in the second half and at 25:39 freshman Kathleen Hunter (Safety Harbor, Fla.) took a header off of a corner kick that just missed the net. The biggest chance of the game came at 5:16 when McCall broke through the defense but sent her shot just wide right of the net. “Today we had chances,” added Blankenship. The Eagles were unable to capitalize and dropped a 1-0 decision to Toledo, moving their record to 4-2.
