Fort Myers, Fla. - A complete team effort was the story that lead the FGCU women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over USC Upstate Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex to complete the inaugural home schedule at FGCU. With the victory the Eagles move to 11-6 (7-3 A-Sun) while the Spartans fall to 3-13 (1-9 A-Sun).
The Eagles managed 17 shots and the defense held the Spartans to only four, including only one in the second half, while freshman Kirsi Keenan (Boca Raton, Fla.) recorded the shutout, making two saves. “Today we came out and responded after Friday night’s loss,” Head Coach Jim Blankenship said.
The Eagle attack was lead by sophomore Amber McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.), freshmen Kelly Sherriff (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Lindsay Haw (Palm City, Fla.) who combined for 11 of the 17 shots.
Though keeping the pressure on the Spartans for the entire game, the Eagles didn’t take the lead until 21:16 of the 2nd half when Sherriff sent her free kick screaming by Spartans goalie Brittany Daughtry (Smithfield, NC.). The goal would stand up and the Eagles defeated the Spartans 1-0.
The Eagles complete their first ever season Saturday, November 3rd at 5:00 P.M. in Deland, Fla. against conference opponent Stetson University.
