FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's soccer team dropped their 2008 home opener to the University of Buffalo by a score of 1-0. Andrea Vescio took a pass from Brooke McCalla and scored the lone goal of the match for the Bulls in the 87th minute. It was Vescio’s first goal of the season. With the win the Bulls improve to 2-0-0 while the Eagles fall to 1-1-0.
“We've got to take our hats off to Buffalo,” head coach Jim Blankenship said. “They came in here and did what they had to do to win. After allowing only two shots in the second half, it's disappointing to give up a goal that late. We had opportunities to score but came up short.”
After a scoreless first half, both teams came out with a great deal of energy in the second half. The Eagles had a few chances to get on the board first, as they registered four shots on goal, three of which were taken by sophomore Caytlan MacKenzie (Calgary, Alberta). Amber McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.) had the best opportunity of the night for the Eagles after a corner kick taken by her younger sister Brianna McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.) ended up right at Amber’s feet, but Buffalo goalkeeper Amy Coron was there to smother the shot. Coron ended up with four saves on her way to recording her second shutout of the year, both by scores of 1-0.
The Eagles will be back in action this Sunday in Boca Raton, Florida as they take on the Sycamores of Indiana State University. Indiana State is 2-3-0 on the year and is coming off back-to-back shutout losses against Southern Illinois–Edwardsville and Florida Atlantic. Coach Blankenship said “We have to learn from this and come out and play 90 minutes with the kind of intensity we showed in the second half tonight.” Game time for Sunday is set for 1 PM.
