FORT MYERS, Fla. – Caytlan MacKenzie scored the Eagles only goal as Florida Gulf Coast University went on to tie Kennesaw State, 1-1, after double over time on Friday night at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
The Eagles (5-2-1) out-shot the Owls (5-2-3) 12-9, and led in corner kicks 7-3.
“I am very pleased with our performance,” said head coach Jim Blankenship.” We came out with great energy, and controlled much of the game. We created some good opportunities, and they came up with a couple great saves, but it was an overall good game.”
The Eagles would put one in the net 22 minutes into the match. Sophomore Lindsay Haw (Palm City, Fla.) sent a ball to Olivia Elias (Coral Springs, Fla.) near the left wing, Elias found Caytlan MacKenzie (Calgary Alberta, Canada) at the top of the box, and MacKenzie was able to find the net to put the Eagles up 1-0 after one half of play.
The Eagles went in to the half leading in shots, 5-3, and corner kicks, 3-2.
12 minutes into the second half, Rachel Baer (Marietta, Ga.) squared the game at one. Katie Scott (Calhoun, Ga.) found Yasha Blount (Columbus, Ga.) at the right post; Blount sent a great pass to Baer where she was waiting at the left post. Baer was able to squirt it past freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla.).
After 90 minutes of play, the scored remained tied at one.
In the second OT, in the 103rd minute, MacKenzie got a good look at the top of the box. MacKenzie’s shot looked great until it found post and deflected in the box and the Owls defense was able to clear the ball.
In the 109th minute the Owls would get the last shot as Caroline Austin (Peachtree City, Ga.) sent a shot that sailed high, and the match would end in a tie.
The Owls goalkeeper Staci Pugh (Fayetteville, Ga.) led both keepers with 7 saves; Elias led both teams with four shots, three on goal.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday, September 28th, when they host Mercer in a conference match at noon at the FGCU Soccer Complex
