JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University womens soccer team fell to Jacksonville University, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the Ashley Sports Complex. The Eagles (7-3-2, 2-1-2) ended their two-game winning streak, while also allowing their first goal in more than five halves, while the Dolphins (6-7-1, 3-3) even their A-Sun record. "We created some good opportunities,” said Eagles head coach Jim Blankenship. “We played well enough to win but they had some great saves to keep us out of the net.”
The game-winning goal came by the Dolphins in the 12th minute. Dolphins midfielder Emme Graham took a shot from five-yards out that found the bottom left corner of the net after passes from senior forward Keri Zwikker and freshman forward Jessica Hurtado. After one half of play, the Eagles outshot the Dolphins 9-6, but Rooney was able to knock four away.
In the second half, freshman goalie Stephanie Powers (Seffner,Fla.) laid out to knock down a penalty kick from Zwikker with seven minutes remaining to keep the Eagles within reach. Freshman midfielder Olivia Elias (Coral Springs, Fla.) provided the Eagles’ best chance to score with three minutes remaining as she launched a shot over the head of Rooney, but the shot hit the crossbar and bounced to a JU defender.
In the match, Powers made five saves for the Eagles, while Dolphins goalkeeper Rooney finished the match with eight saves for her fifth shutout of the season. The Eagles return to action on Friday as they host Lipscomb in an A-Sun match beginning at 7 p.m.
