FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Women’s Soccer team take their second trip down to South Florida, this time to face FIU on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. The Eagles, coached by FIU Alum Jim Blankenship sit 2-0 all-time against the Golden Panthers.
“We are looking for that first goal,” said FGCU head coach Jim Blankenship. “We feel we are getting better each and every day. We wanted to face some great competition early in the season to prepare us for conference play, and UCF, Miami and FIU are three of the top teams in the state of Florida. This weekend will be another good test for us and we look forward to facing another great opponent.”
The Eagles are coming off losses against two 2008 NCAA Tournament teams, UCF (Aug. 21) and Miami (Aug. 25). Earlier this week the Eagles dropped one to Miami at Cobb Stadium by a score of 3-0 as Miami scored twice off of set pieces. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Powers currently ranks third in the A-Sun in saves with 10.
FIU is off to a 1-0 start after their 3-0 victory over Stetson last Friday. Friday marked the first time FIU won its season opener since 2000. Senior midfielder Mayara da Fonseca Bordin was the first of three players to score in the game, netting the first game-winner of her FIU career. The Golden Panthers also matched their number of shutout victories from last season (FIU downed Troy, 1-0, on Oct. 19, 2008). FIU will face Florida on Aug. 28 before hosting the Eagles on Aug. 31.
After the weekend, the Eagles will host the Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic on Sept. 4-6 at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The Tournament features Army, Stetson and Tennessee-Martin. The Eagles will face Tennessee-Martin on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
