FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast women’s soccer team (0-2-1) opens their 2009 home slate by hosting the Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic on Sept. 4 & 6 at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The Kick-Off Classic features Army, Stetson and UT Martin. The Eagles will face UT Martin on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. for Camp Appreciation Night. All campers who come to the FGCU game against UT Martin wearing their FGCU Soccer Camp shirt will get in for free.
The Eagles enter this weekend coming off a double-overtime tie with FIU on Sunday night in Miami, Fla. In the match, the Eagles put up nine shots, seven on goal, and earned six corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Powers went the distance, playing 110 minutes and recorded five saves. The Golden Panthers finished with 12 shots, five on goal, and earned four corner kicks. The Eagles are still looking for their first goal of the 2009 season, FGCU and USC Upstate are the only teams in the A-Sun who have not scored a goal this season. Offensively, Amber McCall and Caytlan MacKenzie lead the Eagles with five shots. Defensively, Powers has 15 saves on the year with a .750 save percentage. Her 15 saves put third in the A-Sun in saves. The Eagles kick-off the classic against UT Martin on Friday night at 7:00 p.m., then conclude the classic on Sunday against Army at 1:30 p.m.
UT Martin (1-1-0) comes into this weekend after dropping a 2-1 battle to Belmont on Saturday night. The Skyhawks lone goal in the match came in the 83rd minute by Jenni Deffy. UT Martin goalkeeper Aubrey Buehler recorded four saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes of play. Three Skyhawks have one goal on the season, and Duffy leads the team in points with three. In the net, Buehler has allowed two goals in two games, has five saves with a .714 save percentage. On Friday, Sept. 4, the Skyhawks will take on the Eagles at 7 p.m., and then will enjoy an off-day before returning to the playing field on Sunday, Sept. 6 to face the Stetson Hatters. Sunday's match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
Stetson (2-2-0) enters this weekend coming off a 3-0 loss to #5 Florida State on Sunday afternoon. The Hatters held the Seminoles scoreless in the first half, the first team this season to hold the Seminoles scoreless in the first half. Florida State was not able to tally its first goal until the second minute of the second half, and then went on to a 3-0 win over the Hatters. The Hatters are led offensively by Tessa Gavilsky. Gavilasky has four of the Hatters nine goals this season and leads the A-Sun in goals, game winners and points. In the net, Andrea Garavaglia has allowed six goals, and has recorded 20 saves which is tied for the most saves in the A-Sun. The Hatters open the Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic on Friday against Army at 4:30 p.m., and then play UT Martin on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
Army (1-1-1) is coming off a 0-0 tie against Fordham this past Sunday. Junior Army goalkeeper Alex Lostetter finished with three saves, all in the second half, the last a sliding stop with 25 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Army sophomore forward Deanna Clegg booted three of her team-high four shots in the opening half when the Black Knights outshot Fordham by a 9-1 margin. Three Black Knights share the lead with one goal apiece as Clegg leads the team with eight shots. Army will face-off against Stetson to kick-off the classic on Friday at 4:30 p.m., then face the Eagles on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 4. Friday will be Camper Appreciation night. All campers who come to the FGCU game against UT Martin wearing their FGCU Soccer Camp shirt will get in for free. There will also be a raffle to win one set of season tickets.
Sunday, Sept. 6. The Women’s Soccer team looks to begin a new tradition at FGCU with the first ever team tailgate. Get out the grills, find those tents, and tune up your corn hole skills. Gates will open for tailgating 2 hours prior to FGCU’s game against Army. Bring your youth team to the game for a fun day of food, family, friends, and above all a great Eagles soccer game.
