FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s soccer team wraps up non-conference play as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to play in the UNF Hampton Inn Ponte Vedra Showcase, at Hodges Stadium on Friday, Sept. 18, and Sunday, Sept. 20.
The Showcase features FGCU (4-2-1), Atlantic Sun Conference foe UNF (2-4-1), Mississippi State (6-0), and The Citadel (3-3).
The Eagles enter the tournament on a four-game winning streak, and have not allowed a goal in the five straight games. Amber McCall and Jessica Swartzentruber added their second goal of the season last week. Sophomores Stacey Payne and Olivia Elias each added their first goal of the 2009 campaign as the Eagles topped Austin Peay and Palm Beach Atlantic by 2-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Powers has not allowed a goal in her last 379:53 minutes. Powers leads the A-Sun in goals against average and save percentage heading into this weekend.
On Friday, FGCU will take on The Citadel at 2:00 p.m. This will be the first time in program history the Eagles will face The Citadel who last season went 3-14-1 and 1-10 in the Southern Conference. Currently, they are 3-3 including a 14 goal win against Alabama State. The Citadel racked up 18 goals in its first two games but since then has only been able to find the net once in its last three matches.
On Sunday, FGCU will take on Mississippi State at 11:0 a.m. Mississippi State enters UNF’s tournament with a 6-0 overall record. The Bulldogs have eight starting returnees from last season and 11 newcomers. In 2008, MSU finished 5-15 overall and was 0-11 in the SEC. This will also be the first meeting between the two teams.
