FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s soccer team looks to stay atop the A-Sun as they continue conference play this weekend as they host Jacksonville and North Florida at the FGCU Soccer Complex. FGCU will face Jacksonville on Friday (Oct. 9) at 5:00 p.m., and North Florida on Sunday (Oct. 11) at 11:30 a.m.
With a 8-4-1 (3-1-0 A-Sun) record heading into this weekend, the Eagles are tied for second in the league standings with Jacksonville (6-6-0, 3-1-0 A-Sun) and Kennesaw State (5-5-0, 3-2-0 A-Sun).The Eagles own one of the league's best defense, posting six shutouts with a 0.77 team goals-against average.
The Eagles are 4-1 at home this season, and have outscored their opponents 8-1 at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
Senior midfielder Amber McCall leads the Eagles offense with ten points and five goals. McCall’s five goals put her tied for second in the A-Sun, and her three game winners position her second in the conference.
Goalkeeper Stephanie Powers is second in the A-Sun in goals against average (.82), shutouts (5) and save percentage (.825).
FGCU is 0-2 against Jacksonville, and 2-0 against North Florida all-time. Last season, the Eagles fell to the Dolphins 1-0, and topped the Ospreys 5-0.
Jacksonville is coming off a win over Kennesaw State this past Sunday, that was their first ever regular-season victory over the Owls. JU won 3-1 in a game that saw Liz Fink score twice, earning her A-Sun Player of the Week honors.
North Florida enters this weekend with a 5-7-1 record, 2-2-0 A-Sun. The Ospreys have given up only one goal in their last two matches. In their win last Sunday, the Ospreys shut out the Bears as senior Kristin Rhodes scored her third goal of the season.
