FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU women's soccer team started strong in their spring season, with a 1-0 win over Victoria University Wednesday, Feb. 17.
In the first half, the Eagles best chance came 15 minutes in. Katie Donnellan (Lake Mary, Fla.) had a break away and slotted Brittany Burt back post, which just missed. Another great opportunity came soon after with a header by Michelle Kuhnen (Eau Claire, Wis.) off of a corner by Brianna McCall (Estero, Fla.). The first half continued scoreless with Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla.) only having to make one save.
The Eagles came out with a little more energy and created more opportunities in the second half. Olivia Elias (Coral Springs, Fla.) hit the cross bar with a great shot attempt. Ten minutes later, Elias was going to goal again. This time she laid it off to newcomer, Burt at the top of the box for the game winner.
Coach Jim Blankenship was pleased with the results. “It was a good start to the spring. We had players step up including freshman Julia Martin, sophomore Ashley Ciesielczyk, and newcomer Brittany Burt.”
The Eagles are back in action this Sunday at 1pm against the FIU Panthers here at home. Admission is free.
