BOCA RATON, Fla. – The FGCU women’s soccer team kicked off its 2010 campaign with a 2-1 win at FAU on Thursday afternoon in an exhibition game at FAU Soccer Complex.
“I’m pleased with the start of the season and happy with the final result,” said fourth-year head coach Jim Blankenship. “It was a good team effort and a chance to play everyone. The team was ready to go and it was good to play against real competition rather than ourselves like practice every day.”
Freshman Jenci Villaverde was able to maneuver past the Owls’ keeper on a breakaway in the 23rd minute and found the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
After taking its 1-0 lead into the locker room at the half, FGCU made it a two-goal, 2-0, lead when junior Amanda Goble corralled a ball that started on a corner kick and beat the keeper in the lower right corner. Junior Stacey Payne served the corner kick to redshirt sophomore Ashley Ciesielczyk, who then found Goble for the goal in the 48th minute.
The lone FAU goal came in the 50th minute on an own goal by FGCU that cut the visitor’s lead to 2-1. Senior Kirsi Keenan logged all 80 minutes in net, as the two teams played a pair of 40-minute halves.
