Women's Soccer Prepares for Campbell
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s soccer team closes out its five-game road swing from home with a Saturday showdown in Buies Creek, N.C. against the Campbell Camels at 4 p.m. at the Eakes Athletic Complex. Live stats and internet video feed links are available at FGCUAthletics.com or GoCamels.com.
The Eagles’ record stands at 4-4-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in the Atlantic Sun. On Thursday, Campbell fell to visiting Stetson, 4-1, dropping its record to 4-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the A-Sun.
FGCU and Jacksonville battled to a 0-0 double-overtime draw to open the 2010 A-Sun season on Friday night before dropping UNF, 2-1, on Sunday. With the tie and win, the Eagles extended their unbeaten streak in A-Sun action to five games (4-0-1) dating back to last year.
Freshman Jenci Villaverde continues to pace FGCU with two goals and one assist while sophomore Jessica Swartzentruber is the only other player to net two goals. Nine Eagles have netted a goal including redshirt junior KC Correllus and redshirt sophomore Ashley Ciesielczyk, who both notched their first career goals against UNF.
Junior Stephanie Powers has been a standout in the net allowing just eight goals in nine games. Her 0.89 goals against average ranks third in the conference and three shutouts are good for second in the league.
Campbell forward Olga Ekblom (four goals, one assist)and defender Kaili Terry (two goals, five assists) lead the Camels in scoring, tying for third in league scoring. Keeper Jamie Panfil has recorded a pair of shutouts this year and is third all-time on Campbell's shutout chart. Ekblom, Terry and Panfil have all been named A-Sun player of the week this season.
FGCU has won two of the teams' three prior meetings, but Campbell topped the Eagles 1-0 last year on an 89th-minute game-winner from Marisa Muller. The Eagles outshot Campbell by an 8-3 margin, but a header to the back of the net off a corner kick with just 1:24 remaining, gave the Camels their first series win.
After being away from the FGCU Soccer Complex since early September, the Eagles land back at home to open October as they host Mercer on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. FGCU faces off with three-time Atlantic Sun Regular Season Champions, Kennesaw State on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
