FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Lindsay Haw’s (Palm City, Fla./Martin County HS) lone goal in the 55th minute would be all the FGCU women’s soccer team needed to defeat Mercer, 1-0, on Friday night at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

“Great win tonight. Three points is definitely a huge victory for the team,” said fourth-year head coach Jim Blankenship. “I’m really pleased with the way we played. Mercer was a quality team and put us on our heels a little bit. We made some adjustments and Lindsay had a beautiful goal.”

The Eagles improve to 6-4-1 on the season and 3-0-1 in Atlantic Sun action. FGCU now has a seven-game conference unbeaten streak (6-0-1) dating back to last season. Mercer, who was tied for first place in the A-Sun, drops to 3-2 in league play and 4-7-1 overall.

With the win and Kennesaw State’s 4-1 loss to Stetson, the Blue and Green are now tied for first with Jacksonville in the conference standings with 10 points.

Haw found her way past a Mercer defender with a one-touch to the right and put the ball into the left side of the net past the Bears’ goalie to give FGCU all of the offense it would need. Redshirt junior Kathleen Hunter (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic HS) cleared the ball to redshirt sophomore Ashley Ciesielczyk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS) on the left side. Ciesielczyk then connected with Haw who made a dash towards the goal. The goal was the second of the season for Haw and her 21st career goal.

Just four minutes later, Haw fired another shot towards net, but this time the ball hit the crossbar and ended the threat. Redshirt junior Katie Donnellan (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary HS) also dinged a shot off the crossbar in the 75th minute.

The score was knotted at 0-0 after the opening 45 minutes saw each team take two shots. FGCU held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Junior keeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla./Armwood HS) had two saves in her fifth shutout of the season and second in conference play. Mercer goalie Cagney Valloch tallied one save.

For the game, FGCU held an 11-3 edge in shots, including a 9-1 advantage in the second half. The Eagles also had seven corner kicks, while limiting the Bears to just two.

FGCU faces off against three-time Atlantic Sun Regular Season Champion Kennesaw State (6-5-1, 3-2 A-Sun) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
