Women's Soccer Receives Votes in NSCAA Regional Poll
Tuesday, October 05, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After sweeping Atlantic Sun foes Mercer and Kennesaw State over the weekend, the FGCU women’s soccer team garnered votes in the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Southeast Region Rankings, announced Monday.

“I’m obviously pleased with getting recognition,” said fourth-year head coach Jim Blankenship. “It says a lot about the work our student-athletes are doing and what they have accomplished. We are on a great run right now and we need to stay focused and finish our business.”

This is the second time in the program’s four-year history that the Eagles have received votes. In a repeat of last year, FGCU beat Mercer and Kennesaw State at their home fields to earn votes from the region’s coaches.

Led by game-winning goals from senior Lindsay Haw (Palm City, Fla./Martin County), FGCU picked up a pair of 1-0 wins against two of the Atlantic Sun’s top teams. The Eagles improved to 7-4-1 on the season and sit in a tie for first place with a 4-0-1 A-Sun mark with 13 points. FGCU is currently on an eight-game conference unbeaten streak (7-0-1) dating back to last year.

Topping the Southeast Region rankings is Boston College. North Carolina took the second spot this week with Maryland and Virginia in the third and fourth spots, respectively. Florida State and UNC Greensboro tied in the fifth spot.

FGCU was also picked as the 62nd team in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Tournament 64 rankings. The Tournament 64 rankings are a running attempt to project the postseason college soccer tournament qualifiers, including every automatic conference berth. For the fourth and final year, FGCU is not eligible for postseason play due to the four-year NCAA provisional period.

FGCU is now preparing for road games at ETSU (6-5-1, 2-3 A-Sun) and USC Upstate (3-10, 1-4 A-Sun). The showdown against the Buccaneers in Johnson City, Tenn., kicks off at 7 p.m. on Friday, while Sunday’s match is slated for noon in Spartanburg, S.C.
