FORT MYERS, Fla. – After scoring her first goal of the season, FGCU women’s soccer redshirt junior Kathleen Hunter (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic HS) earned her first career Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week award on Monday.
After a Lipscomb foul in the box ended a breakaway from FGCU, Hunter was brought to the box to take the Eagles’ fourth penalty kick of the year and did not disappoint. She drilled it into the back of the net to give FGCU a 4-1 lead over Lipscomb. The goal was the third of her career.
Hunter has been part of a back line that has only allowed two goals in conference play and has 10 shutouts on the season, all while posting a 12-game unbeaten streak (10-0-2) in the A-Sun, dating back to last season. The health science major also has three assists on the year.
In their most recent outings, the Eagles picked up a pair of A-Sun victories over the weekend, taking down Belmont, 2-0, on Friday and Lipscomb, 4-1, Sunday.
FGCU (10-4-2) now stands at 7-0-2 in the A-Sun with 23 points, good for sole possession of first place in conference standings heading into Saturday’s season finale against in-state rival Stetson (7-9-1, 4-4-1 A-Sun). FGCU

In different scenarios, FGCU can also win the regular season crown with a Jacksonville (11-4-2, 7-1-1 A-Sun) loss at UNF; or a tie against Stetson and a Jacksonville tie at UNF.
