After waiting out the four-year Division I transition period since the start of the program in 2007, a few extra minutes weren't a big deal for the top-seeded FGCU women's soccer team as freshman Shannen Wacker's goal in the 107th minute of double-overtime gave the Eagles a 1-0 win over sixth-seeded Mercer in the Atlantic Sun Championship game on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex. With the win, FGCU earns the A-Sun’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament and becomes the first team to win the conference tournament in its first appearance since Kennesaw State accomplished the feat in 2007.

The preseason accolades continue to stack up for FGCU women’s soccer senior KC Correllus, who was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Women’s National Division I Top 100 Players list released on Monday. Correllus came in at No. 98 on the list and is the only player from the Atlantic Sun Conference represented.

In its final tune up before the start of the regular season in six days, the FGCU women’s soccer team defeated FAU, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The two teams played a pair of 30-minute halves before playing a final 20-minute frame. Junior Jessica Swartzentruber got the Eagles on the board in the 17th minute of the first frame.

Originally scheduled to kick-off at 3 p.m., the game didn’t get underway until a little after 4 p.m. until another lightning strike 20 minutes into the first 30-minute frame put the game to an end.

FGCU women’s soccer head coach Jim Blankenship announced on Monday that former Anderson University head coach Jason Dowiak has accepted an assistant coaching position to join his staff this season. Dowiak spent the last four years as the women’s soccer head coach at AU.
