FORT MYERS, Fla. – In its final tune up before the start of the regular season in six days, the FGCU women’s soccer team defeated FAU, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
The two teams played a pair of 30-minute halves before playing a final 20-minute frame. Junior Jessica Swartzentruber (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota Christian HS) got the Eagles on the board in the 17th minute of the first frame before a lightning delay cut the period just a few minutes short.
The delay seemed to slow both teams down, as neither scored in the second 30-minute period.
FGCU came out revitalized in the third period (20 minutes), scoring a trio of goals to come away with the 4-0 victory. Junior Julia Martin (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue HS) gave the Eagles a two-goal lead on a nice individual move that got her by the last defender and 1-on-1 with the goalie, beating her with a shot to the left corner.
Redshirt junior defender Ashley Ciesielczyk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS) pushed up to attack and hit a ball played perfectly from sophomore Kayley Clay (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS/Lynn Univ.) on a one-touch past the keeper to make it 3-0. Clay struck again less than two minutes later with the fourth and final goal.
Senior Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla./Armwood HS) played the opening frame in net for the Eagles before giving way to freshman Danielle LeRoy (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant HS). The duo combined for two saves as FGCU held a 14-4 edge in shots and 5-1 advantage in corner kicks for the entire match.
FGCU will open the fifth season in program history next Friday, Aug. 19, as it hosts the 5th Annual Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic. The four-team, two-day tournament features Eastern Washington, Robert Morris and BIG EAST member Syracuse.
Syracuse and Robert Morris will open play on Friday at 5 p.m. followed by FGCU taking on Eastern Washington immediately after.
