Reigning A-Sun Player and Defensive Player earns No. 98 spot
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The preseason accolades continue to stack up for FGCU women’s soccer senior KC Correllus (Merritt Island, Fla./Satellite HS/Florida State), who was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Women’s National Division I Top 100 Players list released on Monday.
Correllus came in at No. 98 on the list and is the only player from the Atlantic Sun Conference represented. The rankings included student-athletes that are seniors, juniors and sophomores, and will be updated on a weekly basis. Correllus was one of 24 players from a non-BCS school that made the list.
A product of Merritt Island, Fla., Correllus was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year a few weeks ago. She was one of three unanimous selections to the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference team, as FGCU was not only tabbed the favorite to win the regular season, but also the postseason tournament.
Correllus helped FGCU capture its first-ever A-Sun regular season crown in 2010, headlining a defense that posted a league-best 11 shutouts en route to becoming one of three teams in the entire country limit its opponents to less than 10 goals for the year (9). For her efforts, Correllus became the first player in A-Sun history to be named both the Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. She also earned a spot on the NSCAA All-South Region first team.
Coming off a 4-0 win over FAU in the team’s only full exhibition match, FGCU will open the fifth season in program history next Friday, Aug. 19, as it hosts the 5th Annual Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic. Syracuse and Robert Morris will open play on Friday at 5 p.m. followed by FGCU taking on Eastern Washington immediately after.
