FORT MYERS, Fla. – After helping guide the FGCU women’s soccer team to 2-0 record over this past weekend’s road trip to North Carolina, senior goalkeeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla./Armwood HS) has been named the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.
The weekly defensive accolade from the A-Sun is the fourth of Powers’ career.
Powers opened the weekend with a career-high 12 saves at Charlotte on Friday night, as FGCU handed the reigning Atlantic 10 regular season champs their first loss of the season. The shutout was the 20th of Powers’ career and the 37th in the short five-year history of the program. Powers was back at it again on Sunday, making four saves in a 2-1 comeback victory at Davidson.
An A-Sun Preseason All-Conference choice, Powers has played every minute in net so far in the young season for the Green and Blue. Through four games, Powers is 3-1 with 23 saves and 0.75 goals against average.
Powers and the Eagles will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. when they play host to A-10 foe Duquesne (1-3). The meeting is the first ever between the two teams and the start of a two-game homestand for FGCU that ends with Miami on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
