FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s soccer team will travel in-state this weekend for a pair of contests against FIU (2-3) and No. 9 Florida (4-1). The two-game swing opens with the Panthers on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
The Eagles are coming off a heart-breaking 2-1 double-overtime loss to ACC foe Miami on Tuesday night. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak as FGCU is 4-2 on the season. FGCU is a perfect 2-0 on the road this season after picking up a pair of wins against A-10 member Charlotte and Southern Conference foe Davidson.
Junior Jessica Swartzentruber (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota Christian HS) scored a goal for the third straight game, becoming the second player in program history to accomplish the feat. Amber McCall had a three-game streak in 2009 and a record four-game scoring streak in 2007. Swartzentruber leads the team in goals with three on the season.
Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla./Armwood HS) has 31 saves and two shutouts on the year. Powers is eighth on the A-Sun career shutouts list at 21 and is just eight away from tying the all-time record at 29.
Florida International is 2-3 on the season after falling in overtime, 3-2, against the University of Missouri-Kansas City on September 2. The Panthers own wins against Florida Tech and Akron. Friday's match will be the fifth meeting between the two programs as FGCU holds a 2-1-1 advantage. Senior defender Kelly Hutchinson leads the team with two goals and one assist.
FGCU has never faced the Florida Gators. The Gators are 4-1 with their only loss coming against then-No. 18 UCLA, 2-0, on August 28 at a neutral field in Knoxville, Tenn. Junior Erika Tymrak leads Florida in points (9), assists (3) and shares the goals lead (3) with sophomore Taylor Travis. Florida was picked to repeat as SEC champions in the preseason vote by the league coaches.
Live stats are available for both games on www.FGCUATHLETICS.com through the service provided by each of the home teams. Kick-off for Sunday’s game at No. 9 Florida was changed from its original time of 6 p.m. to 2 p.m.
