FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s soccer team looks to remain unbeaten in Atlantic Sun conference play as they travel to face Stetson (2-7-1, 1-1 A-Sun) on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Stetson Soccer Complex.
The Eagles (6-3-2, 1-0-1 A-Sun) lead the all-time series against the Hatters with a 3-1 record, including a 4-0 victory last season in Fort Myers. FGCU is riding a 15-game conference unbeaten streak with a 12-0-3 record dating back to October 2009.
Last weekend, the Eagles kicked off conference play with a convincing 4-0 victory over North Florida and a 0-0 tie in double-overtime against Jacksonville. Senior forward Gina Petracco (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) recorded two goals against the Ospreys, while redshirt junior Ashley Ciesielcyzk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS) earned a career-high three assists in the contest. Ciesielcyzk has an A-Sun leading seven assists on the season and is just two away from tying the single-season FGCU record held by Lindsey Haw set in 2008. She is tied for eighth in the country in total assists and is just one shy of the leaders.
Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla./Armwood HS) continued her stellar play, earning two shutouts last weekend to push her season total to five. Powers is first in the conference in shutouts and sits fifth on the A-Sun’s career list with 24. The net minder is currently second in the league in saves with 57, which also ranks 26th in the nation.
Led by A-Sun preseason Player and Defensive Player of the Year senior KC Correllus (Merritt Island, Fla./Satellite HS/Florida State), the Green and Blue defense hasn’t allowed a goal in three-straight games or the last 332 minutes.
FGCU has five players with two or more goals in sophomore Kayley Clay (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS/Lynn University), senior Amanda Goble (Lutz, Fla./Land O’Lakes HS), freshman Melissa Arnold (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional HS), junior Jessica Swartzentruber (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota Christian HS) and Petracco.
Stetson comes into the game with a 1-1 conference record after earning a 3-2 victory against North Florida last Sunday. The Hatters fell to Jacksonville, 3-1, in their A-Sun home opener after holding an early 1-0 lead in the game. Senior Alexis Hermosa leads her team with four goals and one assist. Sophomore Alyssa Welsh scored two goals against UNF, including the game-winner.
