MACON, Ga. – The FGCU women’s soccer team remains unbeaten in Atlantic Sun play after a late goal in the 80th minute from sophomore Kayley Clay (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS/Lynn University), to shutout Mercer, 1-0, on Friday night.

The Eagles earned their fifth straight and seventh shutout of the year to improve to 8-3-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the A-Sun. FGCU has an unbeaten streak of 17 games (14-0-3) in conference action that dates back to the end of the 2009 campaign.

FGCU scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute, when redshirt junior Ashley Ciesielcyzk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS) made a terrific pass to teammate Clay who fired home her third goal of the season. Ciesielcyzk picked up her A-Sun leading ninth assist and is one assist away from tying the FGCU record for most assists in a season.

“This was another great result and the defense was stellar once again,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “I thought the backline did a great job in holding a quality team to just a few chances. “Stephanie (Powers) came up big again and has gotten better with every game.”

The Green and Blue held an 11-7 shot advantage over the 90 minutes of action, including 6 shots on goal. Senior keeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla./Armwood HS) made three critical stops to post her 26th career shutout and is now second all-time in A-Sun history. Powers hasn’t allowed a goal in five straight games, including two double over-time affairs with a streak of 512 minutes without allowing a goal.

Five minutes before the game-winning goal, the Eagles’ Petracco fired a shot on goal but Mercer’s keeper Nikki Atkinson made the save in the 75th minute.

In the first half, the Eagles took eight shots with three of them being on goal. Senior Gina Petracco (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) ended the half with three shots, including a chance in the first minute as Mercer’s keeper Atkinson made the save.

Mercer had an opportunity in the 29th minute when Olivia Tucker placed a header on goal but Eagles’ goalie Powers came up with the stop. Just 20 seconds later, the Bears’ Ali Meek fired another shot on goal with Powers turning it away.

The Eagles came close again in the 36th minute when junior forward Brittany Burt (St. Petersburg, Fla./Northeast HS/USF) fired a shot that hit the post.

FGCU continues its road trip on Sunday against Kennesaw State at 1 p.m. at the KSU Soccer Stadium.
