FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Gina Petracco (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS), junior Jennifer Crittenberger (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons HS) and junior Brittany Burt (St. Petersburg, Fla./Northeast HS/USF) of the FGCU women’s soccer team were all named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District 4 team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America that was announced on Friday evening.
The trio of Eagles are the first-ever women’s soccer players to be recognized with Capital One Academic All-District team honors. Petracco and Crittenberger were chosen as first team selections, while Burt was selected to the second team.
Petracco, Crittenberger and Burt occupied three of 30 spots available on the District 4 All-District first and second team rosters. District 4 is comprised of universities from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico and South Carolina. As members of the All-District first team, Petracco and Crittenberger will continue on in the voting process to be considered as candidates for the Academic All-America teams. First team Academic all-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and thirdteam All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
“This group has been outstanding on and off the field and I am very proud of them,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “The recognition they bring to our team and university is incredible. We take great pride in our academic success and this is a great honor for them.”
Petracco was one of four forwards on the District 4 first team thanks in part to her 4.0 GPA in public relations, as she is on track to become FGCU’s first 4.0 student-athlete. Two weeks ago, Petracco was a unanimous choice to the Atlantic Sun’s inaugural All-Academic team and she was named the A-Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
On the field, Petracco has led the Eagles with 20 points on eight goals and four assists, including a three-point night against UNF to send FGCU to the A-Sun Championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer Complex. Petracco’s 20 points are the fifth best total in single-season history and the Fort Myers, Fla. product was also named to the A-Sun All-Conference first team.
Crittenberger has played all 19 games for the Green and Blue, helping an FGCU backline produce a league-best 11 shutouts. Her 3.75 GPA in accounting earned her a spot as one of five defenders on the District 4 first team, adding to her A-Sun Academic All-Conference team honor two weeks ago.
Burt has also appeared in all 19 games posting a career-best seven assists on the season, which is second on the team. Her 3.61 GPA in communications landed her on the District 4 second team and she earned A-Sun All-Academic honors in 2010.
The Academic all-District teams include student-athletes that are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the first year of the expanded Academic All-America program as CoSIDA moves from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and doubles the number of scholar-athletes honored. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
The Green and Blue host sixth-seeded Mercer in the A-Sun Championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
Tickets for Sunday’s championship game can be purchased in-person at the FGCU Ticket Office or by calling 239-590-7145.
