KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sophomore Shannen Wacker’s (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) goal at 82:31 helped Florida Gulf Coast University defeat St. Louis, 2-1 in the finale of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Tournament on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Ally Kasun (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS) passed to junior Kayley Clay (Cape Coral, Fla./Lynn) who fed a beautiful pass to Wacker inside the box and she was able to beat the goalkeeper for the game-winner.
With the goal, Wacker tied freshman Shea Rhoney (Lithia, Fla./Newsome HS) for the team lead in goals (3). Clay recorded assists on both goals and increased her season total to four. Kasun tallied her second assist this season on the game-winning goal.
“I’m extremely pleased with the result and really proud of the girls,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “The effort they gave to battle back after giving up a goal so early in the game was tremendous. The team came together and I’m pleased with how the team responded after giving up the goal.”
The win, moves the Green and Blue to 5-1-1 on the season while St. Louis drops to 1-3-2. This is the third straight win for the Eagles and it increases their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1).
St. Louis was the first get on the board with a goal by Jenny Hummert at 2:34 into the first half. Hummert received the ball in the middle of the box by Lindsay Elking and put it past freshman goalkeeper Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS) in the left corner. FGCU found the equalizer in the 13th minute when fellow classmate Rhoney scored when Clay set her up at the top of the goal box and she was able to beat the keeper in the upper part of the net.
Both teams had multiple opportunities throughout the rest of the first half but none found the back of the net. FGCU and St. Louis went into the half tied at 1-1.
Defense was tough to get past for both teams in the second half. Only seven shots were taken in the second half, with St. Louis being outshot by FGCU 4-3. Wacker’s goal at the 83rd minute was able to seal the win for the Eagles. Keeper Brown finished the day with five saves on six shots.
Four Eagles were named to the UMKC All-Tournament team. Clay, Kasun, senior Danielle Faller (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area HS) and classmate Jennifer Crittenberger (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons HS) all were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Eagles will be back in action next Friday when they travel to Flagstaff, Ariz. to play in the Northern Arizona University Tournament. The Green and Blue open play Friday against Northern Arizona at 10 p.m. and then wrap up the tournament Sunday when they play UNLV at 1 p.m. Both game times are EST.
