FORT MYERS, Fla. – Currently in a tie for first in the Atlantic Sun standing, the FGCU women’s soccer begins its three-game homestand to finish out the regular season when it hosts in-state rival Stetson at the FGCU soccer complex.
The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and is part of the department’s Third Annual Pink Kick-Off campaign that will feature three games on campus over the weekend. All the proceeds from the meet will go to breast cancer awareness and research.
Currently the Eagles (9-3-3, 4-1-1) are tied for first place in the A-Sun with North Florida (6-6-2, 4-0-1) with 13 points. North Florida owns the tie-breaker between the two teams after defeating FGCU, 2-0, on October 5.
The Green and Blue are 14-0-3 in A-Sun home games dating back to 2009. The last loss the Eagles suffered at home was October 3, 2009 when former A-Sun member Campbell defeated FGCU, 1-0.
Since joining the A-Sun in 2007, the Eagles lead the league in conference wins (37), fewest conference losses (10) and most conference ties (9). In their last 27 A-Sun games, FGCU sports a 21-2-4 record with a 65-6 goal differential.
Currently No. 49 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 64 projections, the Eagles are about to begin a three-game homestand against Stetson, Kennesaw State and Mercer to finish A-Sun regular-season play.
FGCU is 4-1 all-time against North Florida and has won the last four meetings against the Hatters.
Sophomore Shannen Wacker (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) leads the Eagles in points (21) and is 19 in the nation in goals (10). Wacker is currently tied for second all-time for goals in a season with Amber McCall (10), who did it back in 2007. She is now only a goal behind the top spot (11) in that category, which was set by Lindsay Haw in 2007.
Freshman Ally Kasun (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS) is second behind Wacker in points (17), goals (5) and is second on the team in assists (7) behind senior Ashley Ciesielczyk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS) and junior Kayley Clay (Cape Coral, Fla./Lynn) who lead the A-Sun and is seventh in the nation with eight. Ciesielczyk currently has 26 career assists which puts her in eighth place all-time in A-Sun history. One more assist would move her into a tie for seventh all-time (27).
Freshmen Kaitlin Parker (Palm Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic HS) and Shea Rhoney (Lithia, Fla./Newsome HS) both have 11 points on the season, with four goals and three assists a piece.
Freshman keeper Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS) has started the last 13 games in goal for the Eagles, holding an 8-2-3 record on the season and a goals-against average (GAA) of 0.79, which is second-best in the A-Sun and leads the conference in shutouts with four.
Stetson comes into Saturday with a 0-3-1 record in their last four games. Junior Alyssa Welsh and freshman Mara Keomanivane are tied for the team lead in points (6) and goals (3). Goalkeeper Victoria Troccoli has started 13 of 14 games for the Hatters with a .708 save percentage. Troccoli is ranked third in the A-Sun in saves (63) and saves per game (4.85).
