MACON, Ga. –  Freshman Paulina Speckmaier (Miami Fla./Gulliver Prep/University of Florida) and freshman Tessa Berger (Mahurangi East, New Zealand/Epsom Girls Grammar School) have been named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week and Co-Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, when the conference office announced its weekly award winners on Monday.

Speckmaier produced the breakout performance of her career on Sunday opposite the University of North Florida. The Miami, Fla. native had a hand in all three FGCU goals, all of which came in the final 20 minutes of the game.

Her first score came in the 71st minute when former A-Sun Player of the Week Tabby Tindell (Ocala, Fla./Trinity Catholic HS) found Speckmaier open in the middle of the field. Speckmaier settled the pass and fired with her left foot around her defender and past the diving goalkeeper.

The second tally came in the 82nd minute on a breakaway. Speckmaier moved freely through the North Florida defense and found herself in a one-on-one situation with the North Florida keeper. The sophomore poked the ball past the goalie that had come out to challenge the play and the ball rolled into the back of the net giving Speckmaier her fourth tally of the season.

Speckmaier completed her stat sheet in the 85th minute when she found Shannen Wacker (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) who converted her first goal of the season.

Speckmaier’s performance has given her the second-most goals among FGCU players (4). Only Tindell stands in her way with seven. Her nine points are also good for second-best on the roster.

Berger’s highlight this weekend came in the Eagles’ tilt with Jacksonville University Friday evening. Trailing 1-0 with the clock winding down in the first half, Melissa Arnold (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional HS) fed a corner kick to the center of the goal mouth and found the head of Berger who re-directed the service into the back of the net with just 28 seconds left on the clock.

Along with her score, Berger played a key role keeping opponents off the scoreboard this weekend. The Eagle defense only allowed one goal opposite Jacksonville and shut out North Florida. JU scored in the 27th minute of the game on Friday and the Eagles have not allowed a goal since.

Berger has scored two goals this season while handing out two assists for six points which ranks her fourth on the team behind Tindell, Speckmaier and Arnold (7).

Berger shares Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors with Jewelia Strickland of Kennesaw State.

“I’m extremely happy for the both of them” Blankenship said about the accomplishments. “They both played a big role in picking up crucial points over the weekend. I’m happy that their performances have been recognized with well-deserved honors.”

The Eagles are 2-0 in A-Sun play for the second consecutive season and will travel north of the Florida boarder for pair of games next weekend. The team will play at Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m. on Friday before moving on to Lipscomb on Sunday for an afternoon matinee.
