MACON, Ga. – A combination of excellence in the classroom and on the field have earned sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Brown and junior forward Shannen Wacker spots on the 2013 Atlantic Sun Women’s Soccer Academic All-Conference Team as announced by conference office Wednesday afternoon.
The pair of Eagles have helped the Green and Blue to a record-setting regular season, a fourth-consecutive A-Sun regular-season title and a third-straight trip to the A-Sun Championship Tournament as the top seed.
"It says a lot about them" said head coach Jim Blankenship. "Obvioiusly they're student athletes so it's impressive what they've done in the classroom and to be recognized for that says a lot about them individually and about our program. They're super kids so I'm happy for them and really pleased that they have been recognized by the conference for their outstanding work."
Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS) has recorded a 3.93 overall grade-point-average in her time at FGCU. The Pre-Exercise Science major has provided a steady presence between the pipes for the Eagles this season, leading the A-Sun in goals against average (0.82) and shutouts (7), five of which came in conference play. The net-minder only allowed four goals against A-Sun foes as she helped guide FGCU to an unbeaten 7-0-2 record in the conference.
Since Brown arrived on campus, the Eagles have gone 16-1-3 against A-Sun opponents (including postseason) and 26-7-6 overall. FGCU is a combined 33-2-6 in the conference since the beginning of the 2010 season.
Wacker (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) has continued to be an ever present scoring threat in the Eagles’ lineup all while maintaining 3.69 GPA in the field of Resort and Hospitality Management. The forward was also named to the 2012 Academic All-Conference team. She has scored six goals this season to give her 20 for her career, making her just the third player in program history to accomplish such a feat. She is now just four scores shy of moving into a tie with Amber McCall as the programs all-time goals leader. The Parker, Colo. native also ranks third all-time with 51 points.
Now ranked No. 69 in the RPI, the Eagles will await the results of Saturday’s A-Sun Championship Tournament quarterfinal matches before learning their opponent for their semifinal match next Friday (Nov. 8) at 7 p.m. The semifinals and finals of the tournament will take place at the FGCU Soccer Complex where the Eagles have claimed each of the last two titles.
