FGCU: Nine tennis players receive scholar awards Friday, August 8, 2003 Daily News staff Nine Florida Gulf Coast University tennis players received Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete awards for 2002-03. Women's players Petya "Jesse" Yaneva, Izabela Ciesinska, Courtney Dwyer, Diane Murillo, Kristen Foelgner, and Carolyn Johnstone each had grade-point averages above the required 3.50. Yuri Mantilla, Naples' P.J. Passalacqua, Richard Stempnowski and Wolfgang Pinther accomplished the feat for the men. "We are pleased to see that our athletes are not only successful on the court, but outstanding in the classroom as well," said men's tennis coach and assistant athletics director J. Webb Horton. "That is what we strive for." The men finished the season ranked 16th, while the women finished 39th in NCAA Division II. Women's player Juliana Garcia ended the year ranked sixth in the region and, along with partner Yaneva, finished sixth in the region in doubles. Men's player Richard Stempnowski was 34th in singles and seventh in the region. Brothers Wolfgang and Evan Pinther were 20th nationally in doubles, while Nestor Nunez was 14th in the region.
