FGCU Hosts ITA Southeast Region Tennis Championship
Florida Gulf Coast University, in partnership with the Lee County Sports Authority, will be hosting the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Women’s Tennis Championships beginning on Friday, September 24 and continuing through Sunday, September 26.
The three-day tournament will feature the top Division II institutions in the region. The singles and doubles champions from this weekend’s regional tournament advance to the ITA National Small College Championships, scheduled for October 14-17, which will be also be played at FGCU. Eagles assistant athletic director and men’s tennis coach J. Webb Horton is serving as tournament director for both events.
“The tournaments are a culmination of our partnerships with the Lee County Sports Authority, Lee County Community Tennis Association and Lee County Parks & Recreation,” said Horton. “We are excited that Florida Gulf Coast University has the opportunity to showcase our campus and the Southwest Florida community with these prestigious college tennis events.”
Nine members of the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s tennis team will be competing for regional titles this weekend. Seniors Angie Mykieta and Izabela Ciesinska, sophomores Tenille Elias, Krista Polulak, Jessica Atkinson and Lori Colby, plus freshmen Lesley Anne Passoit, Maria Testa Maggiorini and Brett Kinley will represent the Eagles in the 64-draw singles event. Four doubles teams (Maggiorini/Ciesinska, Kinley/Myietka, Atkinson/Colby, Polulak/Passoit) will compete in the 32-draw doubles championships.
Coach Fred Drilling thinks the level of competition in this tournament will help his young squad.
“I want them to get a taste of the level of play that occurs in our competitions and become comfortable at that level,” said Drilling. “They need to know how to figure out ways to get more points during a match, instead of sticking with the same strategy when it’s not working. ”
The ITA National Small College Championships began in 1986 and annually crowns men and women's singles and doubles national champions in each of the ITA's four small college divisions (NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College) during the month of October.
The tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Friday morning with preliminary round singles matches and continues through Saturday. Regional championship matches for singles and doubles are scheduled for Sunday.
Admission is free.
