With Hurricane Jeanne approaching the Florida peninsula, the Wilson/ITA Women’s Tennis Southeast Region tournament at Florida Gulf Coast University was postponed after eight matches were played Saturday morning. “Weather considerations for the participating institutions and the safety of student-athletes were our major concern,” said tournament director J. Webb Horton, assistant athletic director and men’s tennis coach at FGCU. “We are in discussions with the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and the head coaches to determine the best course of completing the tournament.” Winners from this weekend’s event, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University, in partnership with the Lee County Sports Authority, advance to the ITA National Small College Championships, scheduled for October 14-17 at FGCU. Play was halted Saturday with two quarterfinal matches remaining for both the singles and doubles draws. Top-seed Linda Mrkic (Florida Southern) moved on to the quarterfinals before play was suspended, as did No. 2 Dragana Ilic (Lynn), No. 8 Victoria Weltz (Lynn), No. 9 Marie Maussion (Lynn) and No. 11 Marnie Mahler (Rollins). ITA and FGCU officials will announce completion dates for the tournament next week.
