ITA Crowns Southeast Region Champions
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The final day of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Women’s Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University saw Lynn’s Vici Weltz capture the women’s singles titles and Barry’s Ildiko Csordas and Ana Maria Zuleta win the doubles draw to advance to the National Small College Championships.
In the singles main draw final, fifth seed Weltz was a two-set winner over third seed Greta Trotman of Barry 6-2 and 6-3. In main draw doubles play, Csordas and Ana Maria Zuleta rallied from an early 4-2 deficit to knock off Tasi Purcell and Marnie Mahler of Rollins 8-6. Earlier in the day, Csordas and Zuleta beat teammates Helen Wisniewski and Trotman 8-4 in the semifinals. Purcell and Mahler beat Maria Maggiorini and Krista Polulak 8-1 in the quarterfinals before dispatching top seeded Dragana Ilic and Weltz of Lynn 9-7 in the semifinals.
The singles and doubles champions from this weekend's tournament advance to the Oct. 13-16 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships, also to be held at FGCU.
