WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s tennis team dominated over Palm Beach Atlantic University 9-0. This is the first season team victory for the Eagles and a well earned shut-out. “It was the first match I’ve coached with them,” said Eagles interim head coach J. Webb Horton. “I was pleased with how they played. We stressed all week to play the game not the opponent and we played the game.” No. 48 nationally ranked sophomore Maria Braniecka (Piotrowek, Poland) claimed her first dual match victory with a two-set 6-2, 6-0 win over Sailfish senior Kristen Halvorson (Jupiter, FL). Juniors Jonalea Hileman (Fort Worth, TX) and Krista Polulak (Sarasota, FL) both took their singles matches. Hileman defeated PBA’s junior Alli Hillman (Evans, GA) 6-0, 6-1 and Polulak defeated Sailfish sophomore Mandy Mahrt (Kalamazoo, MI) 6-0 and 6-1. Eagles sophomore Maria Maggiorini (Buenos Aires, Argentina) defeated Carola Artigas (Bolivia) 6-1 and 6-0. Sophomore Lydia Diaz Galindo (Seville, Spain) dominated as well claiming a win against Artigas 6-0 and 6-1 in Artigos’s second single match. FGCU’s sophomore Brett Kinley (Boynton Beach, FL) won versus PBA’s Amy Conner. In doubles Braniecka and Hileman paired up to defeat Halvorson and Artigos 8-3. FGCU's No. 2 doubles team of Polulak and Maggiorini took the match against Mahrt and Hillman 8-2 while Kinley and Diaz-Galindo won versus Colby and Conner by default. "For our first match top to bottom, the girls played well," said Horton. The Eagles will now host No. 5 nationally ranked Lynn University this Thursday, Feb. 23 at 2:00 pm.
