Women's Tennis Releases 2008-09 Schedule
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University women’s tennis coach Jennifer Gabou has announced her team’s 2008-09 schedule. The Eagles will be playing in two fall tournaments, beginning with the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational October 10th-12th at Rollins College. Two weeks later the Eagles will conclude their fall season at the University of Georgia to participate in the ITA Southern Regional Championships, October 24th-27th.
FGCU will kick off the spring season by hosting the Johan Kriek Classic, January 17th-19th. Following that the Eagles will have 17 matches, including 10 at home. The regular season starts with four matches away from home, beginning with a January 24th match-up at Florida International. The first home match of the season is slated for February 21st at 10 AM against Northwestern State. Other non-conference home matches include Bethune-Cookman, Bucknell, Harvard, Colgate, and New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Eagles will be making trips to in-state foes Florida Atlantic and Central Florida.
The Atlantic Sun conference portion of the schedule begins February 14th across the state in DeLand when the Eagles will take on Stetson. FGCU will travel to take on North Florida, Jacksonville, Campbell, Mercer, and Kennesaw State. The home portion of the conference schedule opens on March 19th at 2:30 PM against Lipscomb. The other conference opponents that will visit Fort Myers include Belmont, USC Upstate, and East Tennessee State.
This will be the first season under new head Coach Jennifer Gabou. She talked about the upcoming season saying, “This season we will be facing very strong teams from start to finish. We open the season playing FIU who finished last year ranked #47 in the nation and finish the season with USC Upstate who won the regular season Atlantic Sun Conference Title. Our Team is working hard day in and day out and will be very competitive this season across the board, we are all very excited about 2008-2009.”
