Women's Tennis Spends Some Time at the Senior Friendship Center
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Women’s Tennis team continues to remain active in the community, spending a few hours at the Senior Friendship Center on Friday. The Senior Friendship Center is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping older adults live with dignity and independence. They have centers throughout Southwest Florida, including Sarasota, DeSoto, Charlotte, Lee, & Collier counties. Funded in part by State and Federal agencies, and support from private foundations and individuals, Senior Friendship Centers serve more than 10,000 older adults annually. The Eagles spent some time playing Pokeno, floor basketball, and chair exercises with the residents.
Maggie Caulk spoke about her time spent at the Senior Friendship Center: “Spending time at the Friendship Center gave me a chance to meet some really great people. There was so much life in the people we spent time with that it gave me hope for my future. I am so grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community because it has opened my eyes to some things that I otherwise wouldn't have seen. It makes me feel blessed for what I have, and also makes me want to work in the community more, to help those in need. The experience that I have taken away so far has been one that I will remember for life.”
Priscillia Villemond also enjoyed her time spent at the Senior Friendship Center. She said, “Giving to the community gives me another point of view of what is happening outside of my own world, meaning tennis and study. I realize how difficult the lives of many people are and what they are going through. It helps me to be more open-minded, and be more tolerant. I really enjoy giving my time to discover new things, new people, and new experiences.”
After the four hours the team spent at the Senior Friendship Center, the women’s tennis team has accumulated over 100 total hours of community service over the last two months.
