Saturday, January 31, 2009

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team fell to 0-2 on the young season after being defeated 5-2 by the Florida Atlantic Owls.  Priscillia Villemond and Heather St. John each pulled out wins in the singles competition, but it wasn’t enough for the Eagles.

Florida Atlantic got off to a strong start, winning all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point, taking a 1-0 lead going into the six singles matches.  Joanne Power was the first Eagle to fall, losing 6-1, 6-1 to Emma Rossiter at the #4 position.  Shortly thereafter, Priscillia Villemond was able to get the Eagles on the board, earning a point at the #2 position after Dominique Wimmer was forced to retire with an injury.  Villemond was leading in the match at that point, 6-4, 5-5.  The Owls widened the gap to 3-1 following Erika Mrazkova’s 7-5, 6-3 win over Leah Johnson at the #3 position.  Maggie Caulk and Eva Sambrano each fought hard in their matches, but neither was able to pull out a three-set victory, as Caulk was defeated by Danielle Simone 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, and Sambrano was knocked off by Natalia Totevska, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.  At the #6 position, Heather St. John claimed the second point of the afternoon for the Eagles, outlasting Cassie Bergeson in a great three-set match, 6-1, 1-6, 7-5.

The Eagles will take a couple weeks off before kicking off the conference season with a trip to Stetson on February 14th.  The match is slated to begin at 2:00PM.
