Eagles Open Fall Season with Strong Showing at FGCU Classic
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After a competitive weekend of play, freshmen Morgan Bechtel took home the Group F Title at the FGCU Fall Classic. The freshmen had notable wins over Stetson Senior Katherine Nowicki 6-3, 6-3 as well as Armstrong’s Alisa Kagukina 6-2, 6-0. Head coach Jennifer Gabou said, “I am very proud of the way that Morgan came out and competed in singles this weekend. She performed well under pressure and stayed focused the entire time.”
Junior Iris Rendon placed second in Group C while freshmen Melissa Narzissenfeld took second place in Group G with a win over Florida Atlantic’s Natasha Phillip’s. Gabou spoke highly of both athletes afterwards, saying, “Iris fought very hard this weekend and Melissa did extremely well in her matches and is beginning to realize her potential.”
In doubles action, FGCU saw two teams come in second place in their Group. The team of Rendon/Sambrano took second place in Group B while Bechtel teamed up with sophomore Jen Evans to come in second place in the Group C bracket.
“This weekend was a strong start to the fall season,” said Gabou. “I am very proud of our team and the way they carried themselves both on and off of the court.” The Eagles next tournament is at UNF starting on October 9th.
