FGCU Doubles Team Advances to Finals at UNF Invitational
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team wrapped up the final day of competition at the UNF Fall Invitational on Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla. The Doubles A team of senior Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Texas/John Marshall HS/Tyler Junior College) and sophomore Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) held strong and advanced to the championship round.
“I feel that the team fought very hard this weekend and I am proud of the way they competed,” said third-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “I am really excited to see how they prepare for ITA Regionals next week.”
Competing together for the first time, the doubles team of Rendon and Bechtel started the tournament with an upset victory over the UNF team of Melanie Aguirre and Danielle Day on Friday, 8-3, and followed it with a semifinal win over Samford’s team of Morgan and Mallory on Saturday, 8-6. However the duo would drop the championship set against Troy’s team of Grymel and Guijit, 5-8.
In Doubles B, sophomore Melissa Narzissenfeld (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Names) and freshman Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) fell in their lone match of the day to the team of Veiga and Spencer of Troy and Jacksonville, respectively, 6-8.
In Flight A, Rendon fell to Shannon Gunning of Stetson, 3-4, in her only singles match on the final day. In the third place match of Singles B, Narzissenfeld was eliminated by Troy’s Leonie Guijit, 0-5, while Bechtel was victorious over Gabriela Veiga, 3-1, in her lone match of the day in Singles C. In Singles D2, Mandic defeated Veronique Spencer of Jacksonville, 6-2, 6-1.
The Eagles will now prepare fpr the ITA Regional in Athens, Ga. set for October 22-24.
