Women's Tennis Heads to Georgia for USTA/ITA Championships

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team is set to travel to Athens, Ga. for the USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted by the University of Georgia. This year’s Southeast Region event will take place from Oct. 22-25.

“I am thrilled for our team,” said third-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “They have been training hard since last fall with being selected for the Regional as a goal. I look forward to seeing them compete against some very high level players in Athens.”

In Athens, the top collegiate players from 16 schools around the state of Georgia and Florida will compete in a 64-player singles draw along with a 32-team doubles field. Action gets underway with doubles at 9 a.m. on Friday followed by two rounds of singles. The event concludes on Monday.

This year’s field features the 2010 NCAA Team Finalist Florida Gators and17 ITA nationally-ranked singles players. Selection into the ITA Region is voted on by the Regional Committee of coaches and the winner of the ITA Regional receives entry into the National Indoors competition.

The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players competing in each of the ITA's regions across the country over the course of the next two months. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships held at 85 different college campuses across the country.

All matches are slated to be outdoors and the event is free and open to the public. The tournament draw will be released late Thursday and daily results will be available online HERE.
