FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team will put their unblemished record on the line this weekend when they travel to DeLand, Fla. to take on Stetson in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener. The Eagles hold a 3-0 mark while the Hatters have a 5-0 record heading into the Saturday contest beginning at 2 p.m.

“Stetson always has strong teams so this is a great opportunity to test our level of play,” said third-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “Both teams come into the match undefeated so this will be a tough A-Sun opener and a great chance to gauge how we can compete in our 11-team conference.”

Looking to improve upon a successful start to the 2011 championship season, the Eagle improved to 3-0 this spring with a 6-1 win over FAMU last Sunday (Feb. 20) at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The Blue and Green took the opening doubles point and went on to win five of the six singles matches on the afternoon. Other victories this season for FGCU include a season-opening 5-2 win at FAU (Feb. 12) and a 7-0 handling of Bethune-Cookman (Feb. 13) in Fort Myers.

FGCU will travel its entire seven-member team to the weekend dual, including senior Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Texas/Tyler Junior College), sophomores Bibiana Almeida (Porto, Portugal/Schiller International School), Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) and Melissa Narzissenfeld (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Names), as well as, freshmen Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS), Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) and Kelly Colbath (Jupiter, Fla./The King's Academy/Florida State).

The Hatters are coming off a 7-0 defeat of Bethune-Cookman (Feb. 18) in which they swept the three doubles matches, as well as, all six singles contests. Stetson also took down FAU in a 7-0 rout, and its other wins were 6-1 victories over FAMU, Troy and Charleston Southern.

Stetson holds a 4-0 edge in the all-time series, however last season’s meeting was a closely contested match in which the Eagles were turned away 4-3 at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
