Eagles Fend Off Retrievers on Women's Tennis Senior Day
Monday, March 21, 2011

FORT MYERS, Fla. – On senior day at the FGCU Tennis Complex, the FGCU women’s team extended its winning streak to five matches with a 4-3 victory over UMBC on Monday afternoon. FGCU’s lone senior, Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Texas/Tyler Junior College), picked up a pair of wins in her singles and doubles contests.

The Eagles pushed their record to 9-5 (4-3 A-Sun) on the year while the Retrievers dropped to 8-6 this spring.

"I’m glad to get the win on senior day,” said head coach Jennifer Gabou. “Gyanna (Mandic) stepped up big in the clutch and it was good to see her responding to our coaching on the court. Four more matches to go this season and I am looking forward to each and every one."

After the Eagles swept the opening doubles point and took two of the five singles contests on the afternoon, the match would be decided in the No. 6 singles competition. In a three-set match, freshman Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) clinched the match for the Blue and Green with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over Josefin Stange-Jonsson.

Rendon did not disappoint in her final collegiate contest at the FGCU Tennis Complex. To open the afternoon, the senior paired with freshman Bettina Both (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) to grab an 8-4 doubles win over Kim Berghaus and Carmen Jackman in the No. 1 position. Carrying her momentum into singles action, Rendon also recorded a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jackman in the No. 2 spot.

The day’s doubles play saw a clean sweep from the Eagles, as the team of Mandic and sophomore Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) defeated the UMBC duo of Julia Gragera-Cano and Emily Mannix, 8-4, and the tandem of junior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) and sophomore Bibiana Almeida (Porto, Portugal/Schiller International School) used the same result to take down Heidi Danielsson and Strange-Jonsson in the No. 3 position.

FGCU other point on the afternoon came off of singles wins from Evans, who tallied a No. 4 victory over Danielsson, 6-3, 7-5.

The Eagles will now take the road for their final four matches of the regular season. An Atlantic Sun competition is slated next for the Blue and Green, as they head to ETSU for a 2:30 p.m. start on March 25.
