Women's Tennis Completes Day Two at Panther Invitational

MIAMI, Fla. – Lead by victories in singles and doubles, the FGCU women’s tennis team finished Day Two at the Panthers Invitational in Miami on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) won in straight sets against Barry’s Cristina Valladares, 6-2, 6-4. Mandic almost had a perfect day after falling short in doubles with teammate Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS), 8-6 versus Giulietta Boha and Karyn Guttormsen from FIU.
Junior Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) battled in the first set against Barry’s Akemi Maehama before losing a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3). She fell in the second set, 6-2 but responded in doubles. Bechtel and sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) would defeat Lisa Johnson and Sarah McLean, from FIU, 8-6.
The Eagles almost picked up another singles victory when freshman Zhoe Solaun (Gainesville, Fla./F.W. Buchholz HS) lost in the third set to Barry’s Lizbeth Vargas, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1. Solaun won the first set before falling in the second set tiebreaker 7-2.
The Tournament will conclude continue tomorrow with two doubles matches and five singles against players from FIU, Barry and North Florida.
