Women’s Tennis Hosts FGCU Eagle Invitational To Open Spring

FORT MYERS, Fla. – To open the 2012 spring season, the FGCU women’s tennis team is set to host the FGCU Eagle Invitational at the FGCU Tennis Complex this weekend. The nine-team field is set to take the court on Jan. 14-16 with an 8 a.m. start each morning.

The tournament field includes nationally-ranked Miami (No. 11), North Florida, Wichita State, FAU, Northwestern State University of Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin University, North Texas and Iowa State. Also four players are currently ranked in the ITA singles rankings with No. 15 Anna Bartenstein leading the way, followed by No. 39 Gabriela Mejia (Miami), No. 123 Lorena Aviles (UNF) and No. 125 Julia Lorca (Stephen F. Austin).

“This weekend will feature some incredible talent from around the nation,” said fourth-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “I am excited to see our freshman Sarah Means compete in her first event as an Eagle. This is a fantastic event that will put our team to the test early.”

The tournament will get underway with doubles team draws each morning at 8 a.m. and will be followed by the singles draws later each day. Singles matches will consist of a best of three format with a 10-point breaker for the third set. Each doubles match will play an eight-game pro set per day. Tournament draws will be available at FGCUAthletics.com later Friday evening.
