Women's Tennis Drops Final Non-Conference Match to Binghamton, 6-1

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team finished its final non-conference match with a setback to Binghamton, 6-1, on Sunday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

FGCU falls to 7-10 (4-3 A-Sun) on the season, while Binghamton improves to 7-11.

In doubles, the Green and Blue lost a very competitive doubles point falling in all three matches. At No. 1 doubles, the team of sophomore Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) and senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) lost 8-5 against Marina Bykovskaya and Katherine Medianik. The team of sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) and freshman Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) battled to a tough 9-7 loss against Emma Leibowicz and Taylor Hollander, at No. 3 doubles.

In the final doubles match, junior Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) and freshman Marina Diez (Miami, Fla./West Broward HS) lost a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4) against Jillian Santos and Missy Edelblum, at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, the Eagles tied the match at 1-1 when Mandic won in straight sets against Edelblum, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6 singles.

The Bearcats took the lead with victory at No. 3 singles as Bykovskaya defeated Evans, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, at No. 3 singles. At No. 5 singles, Leibowicz won against Diez in the third set, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, to give Binghamton a 3-1 lead.

Binghamton’s Medianik clinched the match with a straight sets win against Botha, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4 singles. The Bearcats would win the final two matches at No. 2 and No. 1 singles. Hollander defeated Bechtel, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, at No. 2 and Santos outlasted Means in the third set, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, at No. 1.
