FGCU Finishes Regular Season with Sweep of Belmont, 7-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The FGCU women’s tennis team won every match in doubles and singles to sweep Atlantic Sun foe Belmont, 7-0, on Saturday at the Centennial Sportsplex.
The Eagles improve to 9-10 (6-3 A-Sun) on the season and Belmont falls to 5-13 (2-7 A-Sun). The Eagles clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming A-Sun tournament held in Johnson City, Tenn.
FGCU opened the match by winning all three doubles matches to lead 1-0 against the Bruins. The team of sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) and freshman Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) won 8-5 against Natalia Nunes and Carolyn Caire at No. 3 doubles. Junior Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) and freshman Marina Diez (Miami, Fla./West Broward HS) clinched the point with a 8-5 win against Nikki Maciel and Laura Stack, at No. 2 doubles.
In the final doubles match, senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) and sophomore Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) rallied from a 6-3 deficit to earn a hard fought 8-6 win against Fabiana Mersan and Catherine Holliday, at No. 1 doubles. Evans and Mandic won five straight games to complete the sweep in doubles.
In singles, Botha won in straight sets against Holliday, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles to give FGCU a 2-0 lead. Means defeated Maciel, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, giving the Eagles a 3-0 advantage.
Evans earned the clinching point after a straight sets win against Caire, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. Bechtel would outlast Mersan, 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-5), at No. 2 singles. Bechtel dropped the second set tiebreaker but bounced back with a 10-5 win in the third set super tiebreaker.
Diez won her second straight match with a win against Nunes, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5), at No. 6 singles. Diez won the last two sets, including a super tiebreaker 10-5.
In the final match, Mandic won a tough third set super tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8), at No. 5 singles. Mandic was able to pull out the super breaker 10-8 to complete the clean sweep.
In an exhibition match, freshman Zhoe Solaun (Gainesville, Fla./ F.W. Buchholz HS) defeated Abby Hogan, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-2). Solaun also won in a third set super tiebreaker 10-2, allowing the Eagles to finish the day perfect.
