FGCU Soars Past FAU 5-2

BOCA RATON, Fla. – In a convincing 5-2 victory, FGCU took down FAU to continue its winning ways and start off the 2013 dual match season 2-0, in Boca Raton, Fla. Saturday afternoon.

“I am extremely proud of how the team fought today,” said FGCU head coach Jen Gabou. “It got pretty noisy here which happens when you play on the road, but they kept their focus and got the job done.”

FGCU started off hot on the doubles courts as senior Morgan Bechtel (Toldeo, Oh./St. Ursula Academy) and junior Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) won their doubles match 8-2 before junior Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) and freshman Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) won 8-3 to clinch the doubles point for the Eagles just 55 minutes into the match.

On the singles court, Sterkel extended the lead to 2-0 in favor of the visitors with a two-set sweep over FAU’s Natalia Tomascewicz, 6-1, 6-3. Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) followed suit with another Eagle victory, but in come from behind fashion over FAU’s Cardullo 6-4, 6-3.

Bechtel’s 6-1, 6-3 victory over Natasha Basma of FAU gave Bechtel two wins on the day and cinched the match to give FGCU its second dual match win of the spring season.

Sophomore Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS), rounded out the day for FGCU by grabbing the fifth and final Eagle victory of the day, 6-4, 7-5.

The Green and Blue will return home for their home-opening weekend for its first two home dual matches of the 2013 spring season against Houston on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 11:00 a.m. and Iowa State on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 11:00 a.m. with both matches taking place at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
